The European Union is seeking closer cooperation with Japan on key technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to reduce its dependence on China.
What is known
EU Commissioner Thierry Breton will meet the Japanese government to discuss cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors and quantum computing.
"I will engage with [the] Japanese government … on how we can organize our digital space, including AI based on our shared value," Breton said.
He said the two sides would set up an EU-Japan digital partnership council. The EU held a similar council with South Korea last week, where they agreed to cooperate in technologies such as AI and cybersecurity.
