The United Arab Emirates has granted the Chinese company WeRide its first national licence to operate unmanned vehicles.

Here's What We Know

The permit allows WeRide to test Level 4 autonomous vehicles on public roads across the country.

The company said it will begin testing "all types of self-driving vehicles". WeRide intends to commercialise most of its developments, including robotaxis, robobuses, robovans and autonomous street sweepers.

The licence is a step towards the UAE ruler's goal of making 25% of transport in the country fully autonomous by 2030. The authorisation for WeRide also coincides with the national policy on electric vehicles.
