The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has demanded more information about Tesla's Autopilot system, threatening the automaker with civil penalties.
Here's What We Know
In a July 3 request, the agency asked for more information on modifications to Tesla's driver assistance system, which has been under the agency's scrutiny since 2021 due to its safety record.
"Failure to respond promptly and fully" could result in civil fines of up to $26,315 per violation per day for a total of up to $131.6 million. The agency has set July 19 as the deadline for filing.
NHTSA began investigating Tesla in August 2021 after a series of accidents involving Autopilot and emergency vehicles. The agency expanded the investigation in June 2022.
