GitHub, Hugging Face and other companies have called for greater support for open source software in the EU AI law
A group of companies including GitHub, Hugging Face, and Creative Commons have called on European policymakers to review some of the provisions of the EU's AI law regarding developers of open source models.
Here's What We Know
The list of proposals addressed to the European Parliament includes:
- formulating a clearer definition of AI components;
- clarifying that amateurs and researchers working on open source models do not benefit commercially;
- authorising limited real-world testing of AI projects;
- setting proportional requirements for different baseline models.
The paper's authors said some current proposals affecting high-risk models do not take into account the financial and resource capabilities of small development teams. Hiring third-party auditors is costly and not always justified, they said.
The group also insists that sharing AI tools in open source libraries is not a commercial activity. Such models should not be subject to regulatory measures, they said.
Banning real-world testing of AI, the companies said, "will significantly impede any research and development." Open testing allows lessons to be learnt to improve features, the letter said.
