The domain ai.com has been transferred from OpenAI to Elon Musk's company xAI
The domain name ai.com has gone from OpenAI to Elon Musk's new artificial intelligence research firm xAI.
Here's What We Know
According to rumours, OpenAI bought ai.com in February 2023 and redirected it to ChatGPT. The domain is rare and expensive as it consists of two letters and forms a word. According to media reports, a similar domain IT.com sold for $3.8 million in 2022. ai.com is probably worth even more due to the hype around AI.
The x.ai website came into existence in July 2023 after Musk's announcement. The aim of the new organisation is to understand the true nature of the universe, but so far the company has not demonstrated any results of its work.
The reasons for ai.com's transition from OpenAI to xAI are unknown. It is also unclear who actually owns the name.
OpenAI has never confirmed that it bought the domain. Musk declined to comment.
