Cruise is expanding its robotaxi service in Phoenix, pushing into Waymo territory

Cruise has increased the range of its robot taxis in the Phoenix, Arizona, US area by 20 times in a bid to compete with Waymo.

Here's What We Know

Cruise launched its drones in Chandler (southeast of Phoenix) in December 2022. Now the company has expanded coverage to Tempe and Scottsdale. The service is free for now and will be available from 7pm to 2am.

Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt said the service will first be available to "power users" who regularly leave reviews of rides in the company's vehicles. Later, the robotaxi service will be opened up to other passengers.

The company did not disclose how many cars will serve the new neighbourhoods.
