Saudi Arabia and the UAE are racing to buy Nvidia chips to realise artificial intelligence ambitions

The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are buying up thousands of high-performance Nvidia chips, joining a global AI arms race.

The countries have openly declared their ambition to become leaders in artificial intelligence, realising ambitious plans to accelerate their economies.

According to people familiar with the situation, Saudi Arabia has purchased at least 3,000 Nvidia H100 chips, which cost around $40,000 per unit. It used state-owned research institution King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) as an intermediary.

Meanwhile, the UAE has also gained access to thousands of Nvidia chips and has already developed its own open-source Falcon language model at the state-run Institute of Technology Innovation in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.
