White House calls for stronger protections against artificial intelligence risks
US Presidential Science Advisor Arati Prabhakar has called for regulating artificial intelligence and ensuring its safety and effectiveness.
Here's What We Know
Prabhakar compared AI to drugs, which can be beneficial or dangerous depending on how they are tested and used.
She also noted that the technology has many risks such as weaponisation, bias amplification and privacy breaches. As an example, Prabhakar cited examples of misuse of facial recognition systems that led to unjust arrests of black people.
She also praised seven major US tech companies, including Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, for voluntarily agreeing to comply with the AI security standards set by the White House.
However, Prabhakar emphasised that this is only part of the solution. She urged the government and lawmakers to take more stringent measures to regulate the development and use of AI.
Prabhakar added that US President Joe Biden sees the issue as urgent and requires quick action.
