Gizmodo laid off Spanish-speaking employees as it moves to AI translator
G/O Media, the parent company of Gizmodo, has laid off employees of the Spanish-language site and started replacing their work with translations of English-language articles using artificial intelligence.
Here's What We Know
Gizmodo en Español previously had a small team that wrote original content for Spanish-speaking readers. The editors also translated articles from English.
Now, new stories on Gizmodo en Español include a link to the original version and a disclaimer. The site's owners warn that the articles were created using automatic translation.
Gizmodo's switch to artificial translation cannot be called successful. On social network X, journalist Víctor Millán noted that some of the site's new articles switch abruptly from Spanish to English.
This may have been the result of a glitch in the artificial translation system.
