Qualcomm CEO believes artificial intelligence will breathe new life into smartphones

The CEO of US chip maker Qualcomm, Cristiano Amon, believes that artificial intelligence could breathe new life into the smartphone market.

Amon said he sees significant promise in the field of artificial intelligence. He said the upcoming Snapdragon Summit in October could lead to significant changes in mobile technology.

"The [Snapdragon] Summit is going to be around incredible use cases that we’re seeing from our OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] and phones and ... could create a new upgrade cycle for phones", Amon said.

He added that Qualcomm is taking a different path than its main competitor Nvidia. The company intends to embed AI in smartphones and other devices, rather than in data centres.

Smartphone sales are down in 2023. Many consumers choose not to upgrade their devices as they see little difference in modern phones compared to older models.

In 2022, global smartphone sales fell 11.3 per cent year-on-year to 1.21 billion units. This is the lowest since 2013, according to IDC.
