A songwriter who uses artificial intelligence to mimic the voices of Drake and The Weeknd has applied for a Grammy Award.

Here's What We Know

The song is called Heart on My Sleeve and was created by the musician under the pseudonym Ghostwriter. According to the author, he composed the lyrics himself, and assigned the performance to an artificial intelligence.

This did not please the label Universal Music Group. The company filed a copyright lawsuit to remove Heart on My Sleeve from streaming services. Before that, however, the track had racked up hundreds of thousands of listens on Spotify and more than 15 million on TikTok.

The Recording Academy has previously said it is willing to award songs that are largely written by humans, even if the actual recording is largely generated by artificial intelligence.

Ghostwriter is thus eligible for a nomination. It will fight for the award in the Best Rap Song and Song of the Year categories.
