California state authorities will study the potential uses and risks of generative AI
California Governor Gavin Newsom has directed state agencies to explore potential risks and options for using generative AI.
Here's What We Know
According to the executive order, state agencies are tasked with identifying the most significant and useful applications of the technology. They must also establish a structure to train state employees to use "authority-approved" generative AI tools in their work.
In addition, agencies will have to analyse the potential negative impacts of the technology, including its impact on vulnerable communities and threats to the state's "critical energy infrastructure".
The order lays the groundwork for new partnerships with the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University that will help study the impact of generative AI on state workers.
