A Gannett company has been caught covertly using artificial intelligence to create school sports reports. After the revelation, the publisher had to double-check every publication written by the AI.

Here's What We Know

Gannett operates a number of regional and national publications, including USA Today, The Arizona Republic, and The Detroit Free Press. The company allegedly developed its Lede artificial intelligence to automate the job of summarising local high school sports leagues.

It turned out that the AI wasn't capable of handling such a job. One such article stated:

"The Hardin County Tigers defeated the Memphis Business Execs 48-12 in a Tennessee high school football game on Friday. Hardin County scored early and often to roll over Memphis Business 48-12 in a Tennessee high school football matchup."

In response to the criticism, Gannett decided to "pause" the experiment. However, the company made no mention of abandoning the use of artificial intelligence altogether.
