Microsoft will take responsibility if commercial users of Copilot AI are sued for copyright infringement

Microsoft has said it will take legal responsibility if its customers are sued for copyright infringement when using its artificial intelligence assistant Copilot.

Microsoft Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith said the company will take responsibility for any potential legal risks associated with the use of Copilot. The policy is a continuation of the corporation's overall commitment to working with AI customers, which was announced earlier this year, according to the company's blog.

Microsoft explained that it chose this path for three reasons:

• to support customers when using AI services;
• to reduce the concerns of rights holders about infringement of their rights;
• to create defences against the possibility of inadvertent copyright infringement as a result of AI.

Smith pointed out that one of the reasons for the partnership is to deal with uncertainty in copyright law without discouraging people from using generative AI.
