Google DeepMind has developed an AI algorithm to improve routing in Maps
Google DeepMind developers have created an artificial intelligence algorithm that will personalise suggested routes in Google Maps.
Here's What We Know
The RHIP algorithm from the DeepMind division includes 360 million parameters. It analyses real data about users' journeys to understand what factors they consider when choosing a route - time, cost, road conditions and personal preferences.
RHIP uses a combination of different AI approaches to plan a route as efficiently as possible, taking into account the likelihood of events.
According to Google, RHIP has improved the accuracy of suggested routes for drivers by an average of 16-24 per cent compared to the base version of Maps. The system learns from user behaviour and should get better at predicting a preferred route over time.
However, large-scale tests are needed to verify the AI's effectiveness in real-world conditions, Google noted.
