Amazon has unveiled a new version of its cashless technology that doesn't need cameras
Amazon has unveiled a new version of its Just Walk Out cashierless shop technology that uses RFID instead of expensive computer vision cameras.
Here's What We Know
Just Walk Out allows shoppers to take items off the shelf and leave the shop bypassing the cash register. A system of sensors and cameras with computer vision automatically detects purchases and deducts the necessary amount from the customer's account.
However, Amazon replaced it with RFID to cut costs. Now each item is equipped with an RFID tag, which, when leaving the shop, scans a special gate and calculates the cost of purchases.
Amazon tested the solution in a sports arena in Seattle and a football stadium. According to the company, the RFID system is easier to scale because it doesn't require a complex camera infrastructure.
Amazon also said the camera-less version of Just Walk Out has increased footfall by reducing queues and simplifying the shopping experience.
