Waymo launches free robotaxi test rides in Los Angeles
Waymo has announced free "sightseeing tours" in fully autonomous cars for Los Angeles residents. This is part of preparations for the launch of a commercial robotaxi service.
Here's What We Know
Within weeks, Waymo will organise six stops around the city where driverless robotaxis can be hailed. Those who wish to do so can get a free ticket in advance.
During the test, passengers will be able to use Waymo's unmanned cars for free within the service area for one week. The tour runs as follows:
- Santa Monica and Venice Beach - 11 October to 18 November;
- Century City - from 20 November to 17 December;
- West Hollywood - from 17 December to 7 January;
- Mid-City - from 8 to 23 January;
- Koreatown - 24 January to 8 February;
- Downtown Los Angeles - from 9 February to 3 March.
This is the first time Waymo is using a "tour" model before a commercial launch. The company also plans to partner with local businesses to make a good impression on citizens.
Waymo has been using a small fleet of cars to map the streets of Los Angeles since at least 2019. However, preparations for the commercial service have only begun in recent months.
