China plans to increase its computing power by 50 per cent by 2025 in an effort to keep up with the US in artificial intelligence and supercomputing applications.

Here's What We Know

According to a plan by six government departments, China's computing power should be 300 exaflops. Today, the country has 197 exaflops.

According to Chinese authorities, the increase in computing power is necessary to support AI applications in industries such as finance and education.

To do this, China is going to focus on data storage, data networks and building data centres. This will increase the use of cloud computing for AI.

China is also looking to strengthen chip supply chain security. In recent years, the US has restricted China's access to key technologies. However, experts say Washington still has leverage to curb China's build-up of computing power.
