New York City Mayor Eric Adams has conducted thousands of robocalls to New Yorkers in languages he doesn't speak. This was possible thanks to artificial intelligence tools.

Here's What We Know

At the press conference, Adams spoke about calls in Spanish, Yiddish, Mandarin, Cantonese and other languages. According to him, this is how he communicates with non-English-speaking residents.

The robocalls informed people about concerts and rentals. At the same time, people were not informed that the artificial intelligence was speaking to them. Many residents believed that the mayor spoke their native language.

When asked about the unethicality of misleading people, Adams said that this way he fulfils his task of managing the city and communicating with residents.

Experts criticised this approach, calling it unethical and "Orwellian". In their opinion, using AI to create a false impression among voters is manipulation.
