US billionaire Elon Musk has warned that artificial intelligence, if programmed by people from the "environmental movement", could lead to the extinction of humanity.
Here's What We Know
Speaking on comedian Joe Rogan's podcast, he said that some people could use the technology to protect the planet. According to him, if AI is based on the idea that humans are harmful, its logical goal would be to wipe out humanity.
The warning comes against the backdrop of an AI safety summit in the UK, where Musk will meet with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Many experts believe such fears are exaggerated. In their opinion, it is not worth focusing on hypothetical scenarios of the distant future, ignoring the actual problems of AI now.
Musk's remarks were prompted by his concern that the environmental movement has supposedly "gone too far" in disliking humans. However, many found these concerns to be exaggerated as well.
