Meta is not allowing political campaigns and advertisers in regulated industries to use its new advertising tools based on generative artificial intelligence.
Here's What We Know
Under Meta's new rules, ads with content that has been debunked by the company's fact-checking partners are banned. At the same time, nothing is said specifically about AI.
As Meta specifies, while tests of ad generation tools continue, they cannot be used by politicians, as well as advertisers in real estate, employment, lending, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and other regulated areas.
According to the company, this will allow it to better understand the risks of such tools in sensitive areas and develop the necessary security safeguards.
The decision comes a month after the announcement of expanded advertiser access to AI-based image and text generation tools in response to the popularity of ChatGPT. At first, they were only available to a limited number of people.
Meta's global president Nick Clegg had earlier said that the use of generative AI in political advertising required an update to the rules. The company has also banned the creation of dipfakes using its virtual assistant.
