Indian authorities are planning to develop rules to detect and restrict the distribution of fake video content generated by artificial intelligence technologies. This was announced by the Minister of Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw against the backdrop of the increasing number of scandals in social networks in recent weeks.

Here's What We Know

He said the ministry held a series of meetings with IT companies and experts. All have come to the conclusion that there is a need to regulate the sphere of deepfake generation more strictly as it is causing serious harm to society, Vaishnaw said.

In the next 10 days, the ministry will come up with practical guidelines on how to deal with deepfakes. It is also discussing fines for violators and measures to prosecute the creators of fake content.

The reason for the decision was the recent high-profile scandals. In particular, the appearance of a video where a famous minister called to vote for the opposition. According to the authorities, the new rules will help to strengthen the trust of citizens and protect democracy.
