Europe now has more highly skilled AI talent than the US, according to a study by Atomico. Over the past 10 years, their number on the continent has grown 10-fold.

Here's What We Know

This talent pool is already evident in the successes of European AI startups. In 2023, they have raised 11 of 36 mega funding rounds over €100m in Europe, including France's Mistral AI (€105m) and Germany's Aleph Alpha (€460m).

In addition, four of the continent's seven new tech unicorns specialise in AI. These include startups DeepL, Helsing.ai, Synthesia and Quantexa.

According to Atomico, Europe is now the net beneficiary of attracting tech talent from the US. The number of IT professionals here has grown from 750,000 to 2.3 million in the last five years. This has led to a boom in new startups - 14,000 in 2023 alone.

However, Europe is still behind the US in terms of access to venture capital. Atomico experts are calling for more institutional investment in tech startups to develop the continent's potential.
