Anthropic, a startup founded by former OpenAI employees and which has developed rival chatbot Claude, is in talks to raise $750 million in a new round of funding.

Here's What We Know

According to CNBC, the round will be led by Menlo Ventures. If the fundraising is successful, the company could be valued at $18.4bn - nearly 4.5 times its previous valuation of $4.1bn in early 2023.

Google, Salesforce, Zoom and other tech giants have previously invested in Anthropic. Cumulatively, $750 million has been raised so far.

Anthropic founders Dario and Daniela Amodei previously worked at OpenAI. In addition to them, the team includes several graduates of the research division of this organisation. Thus, Anthropic is actually a spin-off of OpenAI, but now positions itself as a competitor.

The startup's flagship product is the Claude chatbot, which outperforms ChatGPT in a number of parameters. In particular, it is capable of processing significantly larger arrays of text.

In addition, an independent study showed that Claude demonstrates higher "self-awareness" and accuracy in responses.
