Jony Ive and Sam Altman work on AI devices with iPhone design chief

Apple's legendary designer Jony Ive, along with OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, has started developing artificial intelligence hardware. The project will be joined by Tang Tan, who is leaving his position as Apple's vice president of iPhone and smartwatch design.

According to sources, Tan will head in Ive's company LoveFrom work on the appearance and functionality of the upcoming devices. Altman is responsible for the software component based on AI technologies. So far, the project is at the initial stage of formation of concepts and team.

Earlier it was reported that Altman attracted investment in the new venture, including from SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son. This caused discontent on the OpenAI board, sources said.

Tan's departure is another loss for Apple's design division after the exodus of more than a dozen specialists from Ive's team since 2019. LoveFrom has already poached more than 20 former Apple employees.
