John Roberts, Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, said in an annual report that artificial intelligence is a mixed blessing for the legal field. He urged caution as the emerging technology changes the work of judges and lawyers.

Here's What We Know

On the one hand, Roberts said AI could increase access to justice for the poor, speed up legal research and make litigation cheaper. On the other hand, he noted data privacy concerns and the technology's inability to replace human discretion.

As an example, Roberts cited cases where lawyers have mistakenly referred to AI-made-up court cases in documents. He did not name specific cases, only noting that this was hitting the headlines in 2023.

Roberts also mentioned that a New Orleans appeals court has proposed new rules requiring attorneys to confirm that AI-generated text has been vetted by them if it's used in court documents.
