Microsoft has announced the addition of a Copilot key for launching chatbots to the keyboards of new Windows PCs. The button with a ribbon-shaped logo will be located next to the spacebar.

Here's What We Know

According to Microsoft, this is the most significant change in keyboard design since the Windows button was introduced in the 1990s. It has remained virtually unchanged on Windows devices for decades.

The company has not yet named the PC makers that will install the Copilot key beyond the Surface lineup. Some of them are expected to announce such models at CES next week.

Experts believe that the launch of a dedicated button for the AI assistant is Microsoft's attempt to capitalise on its partnership with OpenAI and make itself a major provider of generative AI technology.

Despite the fact that most people use the internet via smartphones rather than PCs, this is a symbolic start to a year that promises to be a time of intense competition between tech giants in the AI field.
