Waymo is set to begin testing its driverless passenger cars on motorways - a crucial milestone for the firm that, if successful, will allow it to expand its commercial operations.

Here's What We Know

The autonomous Jaguar I-Pace SUVs will start transporting employees on motorways in Phoenix, Arizona, in just a few weeks. The company has been testing with an operator behind the wheel for much of the past year.

If all goes well, the driverless service will expand to regular customers as well, though Waymo is in no hurry to announce any timelines.

Launching autonomous cars on highways is one of Waymo's latest moves in the Phoenix area. Last December, the company began offering ride-hailing services to the local airport, and a few months before that it made its autonomous cars available on the Uber app.

Waymo's expansion comes at a time when its competitors are under scrutiny from US authorities and the public. Recently, Cruise, a subsidiary of GM, was at the centre of a scandal due to an accident involving one of its robot cars. This has led to a number of investigations and high-profile resignations.

Despite the scepticism surrounding autonomous passenger transport Waymo assures that its technology is thoroughly tested and safe for all road users.
