DeepMind co-founder: AI is fundamentally a tool to replace labour
Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of AI lab DeepMind, said in an interview with CNBC that in the long term, artificial intelligence could completely replace human labour.
Here's What We Know
The interview was conducted on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, where AI was one of the main topics of discussion.
"I think in the long term — over many decades — we have to think very hard about how we integrate these tools because, left completely to the market […] these are fundamentally labor replacing tools" Suleiman said.
Experts note that AI's replacement of jobs is already happening. Last year, the technology and media industries underwent massive staff cuts. Major IT companies like Google, Amazon and Salesforce have announced a new wave of layoffs in 2024, linked to greater adoption of AI technologies.
According to analysts, corporations intend to take advantage of artificial intelligence to optimise business processes and create smaller, more efficient teams with few AI specialists.
At the same time, billionaires investing in the technology are making vague statements about supporting the public with automation. Critics see such promises as empty and designed only to prevent social upheaval.
The heated discussions about AI at the World Economic Forum in Davos show that AI technologies are primarily of interest to business elites and big capital, experts say.
