Media giant News Corp, which includes major publications in the US, UK and Australia, has announced advanced talks with developers of artificial intelligence technology. At issue is the possible use of the company's content for AI training.
Here's What We Know
The negotiations were reported by the CEO of the corporation Robert Thomson. According to him, the company prefers to negotiate with IT companies, rather than go to court to protect their rights, as some other publishers do.
“We are hopeful that again News Corp will be able to set meaningful global precedents with digital companies that will assist journalists and journalism, and ensure that [generative AI] is not fuelled by digital dross.” Thomson said.
In particular, Thomson noted News Corp's constructive engagement with OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman personally. The Associated Press had previously partnered with OpenAI, while The New York Times and The Guardian went the route of injunctions and lawsuits.
News Corp's revenue rose 3% to $2.6bn in the final quarter of 2023, helped by strong performance in its business information, digital property portals and book publishing segments. At the same time, news division revenues declined, which the CEO attributed to the shift to digital formats.
