Google has joined the Coalition for Content Authentication and Proof of Authenticity (C2PA), a group of technology and media companies including Adobe, Intel and Microsoft that are developing a way to label content created or modified with artificial intelligence.
Here's What We Know
Google will use the Content Credentials tool developed by Adobe to add a special "CR" symbol to AI content, indicating the time, place and method of editing. This symbol will act as metadata to confirm that an image, video, audio or document has been edited with AI.
According to Google's vice president of trust and security, Laurie Richardson, the initiative is part of the company's responsible approach to AI development. It is designed to increase transparency in digital content and help users make more informed decisions.
C2PA also includes news media outlets like The New York Times and BBC, and photo equipment manufacturers like Canon are already starting to build the Content Credentials tool into their devices. According to experts, this labelling system will help combat the spread of misinformation and fake news.
