Microsoft Copilot gained traction in Apple and Google's app shops after Super Bowl ad despite AI bugs

Microsoft's artificial intelligence app Copilot has made it to the top of the most downloaded apps on the App Store and Google Play after airing a commercial during an NFL Super Bowl game.

The commercial positioned Copilot as an "everyday assistant with AI" capable of searching for information, generating images and programming code.
The commercial seems to have done its job and encouraged more people to download the app. The day after Super Bowl, Copilot was the second most popular free app in the Apple App Store and the 12th most downloaded app in the Google Play Store.
However, some users on social media found that the app provided incorrect and outdated information in response to queries related to the Super Bowl and participating teams. Specifically, Copilot incorrectly listed football player Tyreek Hill as a Kansas City Chiefs player, even though he transferred to another team back in 2022.
When tested again, the AI gave already up-to-date information. This illustrates one of the key problems with technologies based on large language models - inconsistent results for the same queries.
Copilot's success after a massive advertising campaign shows Microsoft's growing ambitions for AI. However, if users don't find the app accurate and reliable, they are likely to opt for alternatives. Thus, the future fate of the chatbot depends on the company's ability to fix such shortcomings.
