Couriers are not needed: Uber Eats launches robot delivery in Japan

Uber Eats has developed an autonomous robot that will deliver food to customers in Tokyo.

Earlier, Uber started working with robotics company Cartken and Japanese industrial giant Mitsubishi Electric to launch "sidewalk robots". The new type of delivery will be available in Tokyo starting next month.

Thus, Japan will become the first country in the world to have a full-fledged and accessible delivery service on the Uber Eats platform. However, this is not new for Japan, as it has been using robots in the service sector for many years.

The Cartken Model C robots will deliver food and move around Tokyo, and Mitsubishi Electric will monitor their work.

Cartken Model C robots use artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies to navigate the environment. They are able to avoid obstacles, yield to pedestrians and stop at traffic lights, and their speed is about the same as that of an adult.
