OpenAI accused the New York Times of tricking ChatGPT into reproducing copyrighted articles

OpenAI said in a lawsuit against The New York Times that the publication used "deceptive cues" to get the ChatGPT chatbot to repeat copyrighted material.

According to OpenAI, The Times exploited a vulnerability in ChatGPT, which the company's experts are currently working on fixing. In addition, journalists allegedly entered fragments of articles directly into the chatbot, forcing it to produce verbatim quotes from them.

The publication called these accusations erroneous. The New York Times' chief lawyer said that the journalists only tested OpenAI's products, proving that they illegally copied the publication's content.

The Times previously sued OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming that their chatbots were replicating the publication's content, depriving it of revenue. OpenAI is attempting to partially dismiss the claims.
