DeepMind and InflectionAI co-founder Mustafa Suleyman has moved to Microsoft to lead the new Microsoft AI organisation, overseeing the development of Copilot and other consumer AI products and research.

Here's What We Know

Suleyman has been promoted to executive vice president and general manager of Microsoft AI. He will report directly to CEO Satya Nadella and will be part of Microsoft's senior leadership team.

Inflection co-founder Karén Simonyan has also joined the team as Chief Scientist reporting to Suleyman. Several leading engineers, researchers and AI experts from Inflection have followed them to Microsoft.

"I’ve known Mustafa for several years and have greatly admired him as a founder of both DeepMind and Inflection, and as a visionary, product maker, and builder of pioneering teams that go after bold missions" - Nadella said.

He also praised Simonyan's contribution in developing breakthrough AI technologies including AlphaZero.

As part of the reorganisation, the Copilot, Bing, Edge, and GenAI teams as well as the GenAI division will come under Suleiman. The changes are designed to accelerate Microsoft's innovation in consumer AI amid the changing landscape of the industry.

Kevin Scott will retain his position as CTO and VP of AI, with responsibility for overall AI strategy. Rajesh Jha will continue to develop Copilot for Microsoft 365, working closely with the Suleiman team.
