The European Union has ordered Facebook, TikTok and other tech companies to identify and clearly label deepfakes and other content generated by artificial intelligence. The requirement is contained in new EU guidelines for platforms ahead of the EU general election in June.

Here's What We Know

The recommendations are part of measures to restrict digital giants under the Digital Services Act (DSA). It defines 22 platforms, including Instagram and YouTube, as "very large" and obliges them to tackle election risks.

The EU is particularly concerned about the possible impact of Russian disinformation on the upcoming 6-9 June vote. Under the new rules, platforms must assess and mitigate AI risks, promote official election information and limit monetisation of dangerous content.

"We are making full use of all the tools offered by the DSA to ensure platforms comply with their obligations and are not misused to manipulate our elections" European Commissioner Thierry Breton said.

Violators will face large-scale inspections and heavy fines. Platforms have already started introducing measures to "reduce the impact of incidents that could influence the outcome of the election."
