Meta is expanding the use of special tags for content created with artificial intelligence.

Here's What We Know

Starting in May, the company will add a "Made with Artificial Intelligence" badge to videos, audio and images where it detects signs of AI generation. Content will also get the mark if users themselves indicate that it is AI-generated.

Previously, Meta only used the "Imagined with AI" label for photos created with its tools. Now, however, the company will expand the labelling to make such content more transparent to users.

The decision follows a recommendation from Meta's Supervisory Board regarding a video that manipulated the image of US President Joe Biden. The board suggested that the company "quickly review" the policy ahead of the 2024 election.

Meta agreed and said it would keep such content on platforms, but with the addition of appropriate tagging and context. The company also promised to stop deleting photos and videos only for violating its media manipulation policy.

That said, Meta will still remove content that violates its policies, regardless of whether it is AI or human-generated.

The watchdog praised Meta's decision, saying it will provide more context and transparency for different types of manipulated media.
