Microsoft has announced the opening of a new London centre for its recently unveiled consumer artificial intelligence division. The centre will be headed by Jordan Hoffmann, an AI scientist and engineer who has previously worked at Inflection AI and Deepmind.

Here's What We Know

Hoffmann's appointment to a senior position in the London office follows Microsoft's recent announcement of a new consumer AI division led by the founders of Inflection AI, a startup in which Microsoft previously invested. Inflection's founders include Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Deepmind, which was acquired by Google in 2014.

Suleyman described Hoffman as "an exceptional AI scientist and engineer" who will now head Microsoft's new London office. The company plans to open more positions in the London office in the near future.

Microsoft's decision follows its recent announcement of a three-year £2.5bn ($3.15bn) investment in AI infrastructure and training in the UK. The country is considered one of the world's leaders in artificial intelligence research and development.

The opening of Microsoft's new centre in London could also increase competition with DeepMind, owned by Google and also based in the UK capital, in the race to dominate the AI technology market.
