Microsoft to launch new artificial intelligence centre in London
Microsoft intends to create a new AI centre in the British capital that will focus on product development and research. It is known that the future unit will be headed by British Mustafa Suleiman, who is also a co-founder of Google DeepMind.
Here's What We Know
Microsoft, as the main investor in OpenAI (ChatGPT), is a leader in AI technologies. However, competition for AI talents has intensified in Europe in recent months, so the company may try to attract experts from other AI-focused companies to staff its new division, such as OpenAI.
The move is also a victory for Britain, which is seeking to strengthen its position as a tech superpower after hosting the world's first global AI security summit.
Last month, Microsoft hired DeepMind co-founder Suleiman to lead its internal Microsoft AI division. Suleiman left his own recently created company Inflection AI to join Microsoft. He took a dozen employees with him.
Although it remains unclear how many jobs the new centre will create, Microsoft is investing £2.5 billion ($3.16 billion) in data centre infrastructure and AI skills across the UK.
