Amazon Halo Rise: a smart alarm clock that monitors your sleep for $140
Amazon unveiled a useful sleep monitoring gadget at an event today, the Amazon Halo Rise.
Details
The device is designed as a compact bedside alarm clock and will appeal to those who watch their health but don't want to wear a smartwatch or various smart bracelets.
Halo Rise has no cameras or microphones, but instead uses low-power sensors to detect micro-movements that occur when you breathe. Using machine learning, the system then converts these micro-movements into sleep stages and displays the information in an app. Interestingly, the device also detects factors that can affect the user's sleep: humidity, temperature, light, etc.
The manufacturer assures that the device is trained to analyze only the person closest to it and not other people or animals, even if they are in the same bed.
Due to the lack of a microphone, the Amazon Halo Rise can't detect snoring, coughing and talking in your sleep. But it is a plus in terms of privacy. Motion and sleep stage data are encrypted during transmission and in the cloud and are automatically deleted after 10 days. Amazon promises not to use this information for marketing, product recommendations or advertising.
The novelty also acts as a bedside clock and alarm clock and wakes you up by selecting the best time depending on your sleep stage and using unobtrusive backlighting.
Price & When We Can Expect It
The Amazon Halo Rise costs $139.99, and will go on sale later this year.
