The indignation of some users over the presence of a proprietary Lightning port in Apple smartphones has lasted for more than a year. The Cupertino-based company has no plans to release an iPhone with USB-C yet, but engineer Ken Pilonnel has done it instead.

What we know

The enthusiast has replaced Lightning with USB Type-C with his own hands in the smartphone iPhone X, which was introduced four years ago. According to the engineer, the symmetrical USB connector can be used not only to charge the battery, but also to transfer data via cable to a PC.

To realize his idea, Pilonnell had to create a separate motherboard with a USB-C port. For several months the enthusiast has been working on shrinking the connector. He promises to describe the replacement of Lightning for USB-C in details.
