Back in January 2020, the media reported that Apple was working on a new "Pro" mode that would allow MacBook users to get maximum performance while ignoring some power saving restrictions. And now the latest beta version of macOS Monterey suggests that Apple is still working on a similar feature, now called "High Power".

The first references to "Pro" mode were found in macOS Catalina 10.15.3. MacOS internal code described the option as something that allowed applications to run faster, but also warned about reduced battery life and increased fan noise. The feature never became available to users, and all mentions were removed from the beta version of macOS Monterey - until today.

The source found mentions of a new "High Power" mode added to macOS Monterey beta 8, which was released to developers just hours ago. While "Low Power Mode" already exists and reduces the performance of Mac laptops to save battery life, "High Power Mode" is expected to do the opposite, allowing users to run applications at full performance even when the MacBook is not powered up.

Unfortunately, the feature remains unavailable to users, and it's unclear whether Apple plans to introduce "High Power Mode" for all or just certain Mac models. Rumors suggest that the company will introduce new MacBook Pro models with the M1X chip with improved graphics later this year, so we can assume that "High Power Mode" may be exclusive to the new Macs.
