The US Air Force has invested $600 million to build three hangars for the fifth-generation F-35A Lightning II fighter jets at Tyndall Base in Florida
In 2018, the US Air Force Base Tyndall, Florida, was partially destroyed due to a hurricane. The Pentagon is investing $5 billion in recovery and reconstruction. Part of the funds is aimed at building hangars for the F-35.
Here's What We Know
Three new hangars for the fifth-generation F-35A Lightning II fighter jets will appear on the airbase, one for each of the three squadrons. This will make aircraft maintenance more efficient than ever before.
The three hangars will become part of what is known as Zone One. This is the area designated for flying. Zone One will include a maintenance complex, headquarters, aircraft parking areas, equipment storage, a corrosion control facility and a building with flight simulators.
The construction contract was valued at $532 million, but could be increased to $604 million. Officials believe the high price will be justified by the quality. Each hangar will serve as a home for maintenance personnel and rafts.
All ground equipment will be located inside the building. The hangars will also be provided with high-speed wireless internet. In the future, technicians will be able to use augmented reality headsets to improve the aircraft maintenance process.
