The Ukrainian Air Force wants to get the Swedish Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighters for service.

Here's What We Know

This was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to Sweden on 19 August. According to Zelensky, experienced Ukrainian pilots have already arrived in Sweden to test fighter jets and undergo basic training on simulators.

Despite such steps, Sweden has no plans to transfer the aircraft to Ukraine yet. According to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, the Swedes still need these fighters themselves.

For those not in the know

The JAS 39 Gripen is Sweden's fourth-generation multirole fighter. It is being developed by the Saab company. Work on the aircraft began in 1979. In 1988, the JAS 39 Gripen took to the skies for the first time. The fighter is in service with the Swedish Air Force. In addition, it is also used by the armies of the Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa, Thailand and Brazil.

By the way, despite the desire to receive Saab JAS 39 Gripen, the main priority of Ukraine is American fighters F-16 Fighting Falcon. The first aircraft could arrive in Ukraine as early as the end of this year.
