Ukrainian Su-27 fighter jets can also launch JDAM Extended Range smart bombs
Almost two months ago, it became known that the Ukrainian Air Force was using MiG-29 fighters to launch JDAM-ERs. As it turned out, the carrier of long-range smart bombs is also Su-27.
Here's What We Know
The press service of the Ukrainian Air Force published a photo of a Soviet Su-27 fighter with a Mark 82 bomb attached. The JDAM-ER equipment kit increases the launch range to 72 kilometres. The maximum deflection is 11 metres.
The JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) allows free-fall bombs to be turned into smart bombs by using wings and tail unit with controlled plumage. Western fighters can select a target during flight.
The Ukrainian Air Force is still using Soviet aircraft, so target information is set at the aerodrome. The same principle is used by Soviet fighters to launch American AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles.
