On 17 August 2023, an emergency accident involving a US F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet occurred at Misawa Air Base in Japan. The US Air Force has launched an investigation into the incident.

The 35th Fighter Wing is on a deterrence mission and intends to make safe flying its top priority. This was stated by Josephine Rios, public affairs manager.
The Air Force amn/nco/snco Facebook page posted photos of an F-16D (two-seat) fighter jet at the Misawa base. The photos show the aircraft tilted on its left side and leaning precariously on something resembling an external fuel tank.
Although the photos were published by an unofficial source, Josephine Rios confirmed the emergency. She also said that the US Air Force has launched investigations to establish the cause of the incident.
The 35th Fighter Regiment specialises in suppressing and destroying enemy air defences. The mission of the F-16 Fighting Falcon is called Wild Weasel.
