An American fourth-generation F/A-18D fighter jet crashed near San Diego. The incident occurred in a deserted area.

Here's What We Know

The F/A-18D Hornet crashed near Marine Corps Air Station Marimar, California. The service said in a statement that there were no signs of property damage on the ground. The aircraft went down on property owned by the U.S. government.

The incident occurred on the night of 24 August local time, but the Marine Corps did not officially announce the crash until the following morning. Eight hours after the crash, search and rescue efforts were still underway.

The F/A-18D Hornet is a two-seat fighter aircraft. That said, the US Marine Corps has not yet said whether the co-pilot was on board the aircraft.
