Turkey needs new investors to develop its fifth-generation fighter jet programme. The aircraft, which is known as the TF-X and KAAN, is expected to enter service by the end of this decade.

Here's What We Know

Azerbaijan is joining the programme. The country has already signed the relevant agreement. Another new member of the project may become Pakistan. The addition of new partners will allow Turkey to attract additional investments, reducing the burden on its own budget.

For Pakistan it will be the second international partnership in the field of fighter jets. The South Asian country has a JF-17 aircraft in service with China's Chengdu Aircraft Corp.

The Turkish economy has fallen on hard times. The country is facing high inflation, and foreign debt reached nearly $476 billion in March. Total foreign debt repayable over the next 12 months has risen to about $250 billion, according to Allianz Trade.
