America intends to deploy two squadrons of F-35A fighter jets, which can carry nuclear weapons, to a base in the United Kingdom. The aircraft should arrive in the UK by the end of this year.
US fourth-generation F-15E Strike Eagle fighters are now stationed at Lakenheath. They too can strike with nuclear weapons, but are less advanced than the F-35A.
Lakenheath is home to four squadrons of the US Air Force's 48th Fighter Wing. The deployment of the F-35A to the UK was reported by The Telegraph, citing a source in the Kingdom's Ministry of Defence.
