Raytheon has delivered the first active phased array radar to modernise the B-52 Stratofortress nuclear bomber
Boeing has received the first active phased array radar for the B-52 Stratofortress strategic bomber. The supplier is Raytheon Company.
Here's What We Know
The B-52 Stratofortress upgrade programme is designed to replace the radar, which has been in use since the 1960s. The new radar will be used for system integration, verification and testing.
The nuclear bomber with the new radar station will be able to improve its navigation and targeting capabilities in high-threat regions. Michelle Styczynski, vice president of the Agile Radar Solutions division at Raytheon, said.
The upgrades ensure that the B-52 Stratofortress will remain a relevant weapon for the U.S. Air Force for years to come. Radar production is set up at Raytheon's plants in California and Mississippi. The company wants to complete deliveries by the summer of 2024.
In parallel, Boeing and Rolls-Royce are testing a new F130 engine for the B-52. The modernised aircraft will be designated the B-52J. Rolls-Royce plans to complete testing of the propulsion system this year to begin flight testing from 2024.
